ART HISTORY HAPPY HOUR IS
Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan and Dr. Sarah C. Schaefer

PictureDrs. Sarah (left) and Tina (right), February 2015
Since entering the Ph.D. program in Art History at Columbia University together, we've been not only colleagues, but also the best of friends. For fourteen years (and counting!), we've co-presented conference papers, traveled together abroad, and accompanied each other to countless exhibitions; we've even co-hosted our birthday parties and been in each others' weddings.

Though our superficial differences are many (Midwest vs. Miami; rock vs. techno; beer vs. cocktails...), we share a common vision: making art and its history accessible to broad and diverse audiences. We strongly believe in the universal importance of "learning to look," as visual art gives form to our past, present, and future. By sharing our private happy hour conversations about art with the public, we hope to make art more meaningful for more audiences.

We began podcasting in July 2014, under the name "State of the Arts"; we went on hiatus in October 2017; and we returned--at long last, and thanks in part to the persistent requests of our loyal listeners!--in March 2021, under our new name, "Art History Happy Hour." We've learned so much about art and teaching since we started this adventure almost seven years ago, and we hope we're not only back, but better than ever.

In addition to co-hosting this podcast, Sarah is Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and Tina is an Assistant Curator at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo.
